Archaeology : The quest for ancient societies

Archaeology is the scientific study of culture based on material evidence, the objects left behind, sometimes deliberately, by people in the past. Culture may be described as the collective behaviour of a group of people and this includes their technology, their language, social organisation, religion and values. Not all of these aspects can be identified in the same way through material remains but the excitement of discovery is present at every step of the exploration. The prime method of data acquisition in archaeology is through excavation, the removal of soil which has covered the material remains of the past.
